Location Maps

County Tipperary is Ireland's largest inland county and has borders with no less than eight other counties, more than any other county. These are (clockwise from the south) Waterford, Cork, Limerick, Clare, Galway, Offaly, Laois and Kilkenny.

This makes Tipperary an ideal base for touring. The main Dublin - Cork road (N7/N8/M8) and the Rosslare - Waterford - Limerick - Galway road (N25/N24) cross in Cahir just a few kilometres from The Old Convent.

Map of Ireland showing general location of TOC
The Old Convent is located in a beautiful area known as The Golden Vale, one of the most fertile areas in Europe. We are surrounded by three mountain ranges plus the solitary Slievenamon - the maidens mountain. Also close by are the river Suir, the Nire Valley, the Glen of Aherlow and many other scenic areas for drives and walks.

Driving Directions to The Old Convent

From the Local Area

From Cahir—From the town centre (the square) follow signs for the Mitchelstown direction and then take the first left (or the second left if you miss the first one—its easily done) after crossing the river bridge. This is the R668 road to Clogheen (see map above). The R668 joins the R665 just outside Clogheen. Turn right at this 'T' junction into the centre of the village and turn left, following signs to 'The Vee' and Lismore. The Old Convent will be found on the right a few hundred metres down the road.

From Cashel—Take the M8 in the Cork direction. Leave the M8 at Cahir (junction 10) and then follow directions from Cahir, above.

From Clonmel—From the town centre cross the river to join the R665 Ardfinnan/Clogheen road. In the centre of Clogheen turn left, following signs to 'The Vee' and Lismore. The Old Convent will be found on the right a few hundred metres down the road.

From Lismore—From the town centre take the N72 in the direction of Cappoquin and Dungarvan. Just after crossing the river Blackwater take the second left turn (just as the main road bears round to the right) signposted Clogheen and 'The Vee'. This is a superb drive up through a steep-sided wooded valley, up onto the Knockmealdowns and then down the other side, with spectacular views of 'The Golden Vale' (see photo at the top of the 'Links' page) and on into Clogheen. The Old Convent will be on your left just as you start to enter the village.

From Mitchelstown—Take the R665 through Ballyporeen (the ancestoral home of President Ronald Reagan) on into Clogheen. In the village centre turn right, following signs for 'The Vee' and Lismore, and The Old Convent will be on your right a few hundred metres down the road.

From Tipperary Town—Take the N24 road to Cahir and follow the directions from Cahir given above.

From Major Towns

From Dublin—Follow signs for the N7/M7 in the direction of Limerick. In the vicinity of Portlaoise exit onto the N8/M8 towards Cork, exit the M8 at Cahir (junction 10) and then follow directions from Cahir given above.

From Dublin Airport—Follow M1 towards Dublin city and then join the M50 (toll road) westbound until you reach the N7 exit. Join the N7 in the Limerick direction, this then becomes the M7. Exit the M7 to join the N8/M8 in the Cork direction (this junction is near Portlaoise) then exit the M8 at Cahir and follow the directions from Cahir given above.

From Belfast—Take the M1 south and exit at junction 7 onto the A1 south through Newry and Dundalk. Join the M1 south of Dundalk and join the M50 westbound just south of Dublin Airport. From this point follow the directions given above from Dublin Airport.

From Cork—take the N8/M8 in the Dublin direction as far as Mitchelstown. Avoid the Mitchelstown bypass and, instead, drive through the town. Shortly after passing through the town square you will come to a crossroads controlled by traffic lights. Turn right here onto the R665 (signposted to Ballyporeen) and follow the directions given above from Mitchelstown.

From Cork Airport—Follow the exit signs until you get to the roundabout (rotary) at the main entrance/exit on the N27. Take the first exit and drive down the hill towards the city until you reach a complex junction with a flyover. Pass under the flyover and bear round to the right following signs to the N25, the N8/M8 and Dublin. After a few miles you pass through the 'Jack Lynch' tunnel below the river Lee. On exiting the tunnel pass under a flyover following signs to the N8/M8 and Dublin. On reaching Mitchelstown use the directions given above from Cork.

From Galway—Direct route—Leave Galway on the N6 but then, after a few kilometres, take the N18 in the direction of Gort, Ennis and on to Limerick city. In Limerick, follow signs for the N24 (Waterford road) which will take you through Tipperary town and on to Cahir from where you can follow the directions given above in the local area section.

From Galway—More scenic route—Leave Galway on the N6 and, about 2km beyond Loughrea, take the N65 to Portumna. From here there are three choices. The direct route would be to take the N65 to Nenagh, the R498 to Thurles, the N62 and N8 to Cahir and on to Clogheen.

Given more time, from Portumna you can take in the eastern side of Lough Dearg by taking the N65 Nenagh road for about 3km and then the R493 to Terryglass and beyond. The R493 runs closer to the lake and will take you to Nenagh—from where you take the R498 to Thurles, the N62 and N8 to Cahir and on to Clogheen. Some short side-trip will be required off the R493 to get close to the lake. An alternative from Thurles would be to take the R659 to Holycross to see the famous Holycross Abbey. From here the R660 will take you to Cashel with excellent views of the famous Rock of Cashel. From Cashel take the N8 to Cahir and on to Clogheen.

Given even more time, from Portumna take the R352 down the western side of Lough Dearg to Killaloe. From Killaloe make your way to Limerick city, follow signs for the N24 (Waterford road) down to Cahir and then on to Clogheen following the directions in the local section above.

From Kilkenny—Take the N76 to Clonmel and then follow the directions from Clonmel to The Old Convent in the local section above.

From Killarney—Take the N22 east out of Killarney and a short distance from the town turn left onto the N72 to Mallow. Pass through Mallow, still on the N72. After a short distance turn left onto the N73 to Mitchelstown and follow the directions from there in the local section above.

From Limerick—Follow signs for the N24 (Waterford road) which will take you through Tipperary town and on to Cahir from where you can follow the directions given above in the local area section.

From Shannon Airport—Take the N18 into Limerick city, follow signs for the N24 (Waterford road) which will take you through Tipperary town and on to Cahir from where you can follow the directions given above in the local area section.

From Tralee—Take the N21 to Limerick via Castleisland, Abbeyfeale and Newcastle West. Shortly after passing through Adare (well worth a stop) the N21 becomes the N20. On approaching Limerick follow signs for the N7 (Dublin road) and the N24. Take the N24 south to Cahir and follow the directions in the local section above to get to The Old Convent.

From Waterford—Take the N24 to Clonmel and follow the directions from there to The Old Convent given in the local section above.
